I want to start a new Career as an Electrician. Besides taking online course, what else is involved?

I am thinking about taking online courses with Penn Foster to be an Electrician but I am not sure what happens after that. I live out in the country so I am trying to figure out what lies ahead. Can anyone tell me what I am going to need to do after the online courses?
