How do reduce the electrical energy used by an appliance?

I'm wondering how I can reduce the electrical energy used by my waffle maker by up to 10% or more. I was thinking maybe to unplug the computer when it is not in use. Is there any other way I can reduce the electrical energy used by my waffle maker?
