How do you pay an electrician?

I've tried googling it but don't know quite how to word my question to get an appropriate response, after all of the electricians have their bid put in and we pick, do we pay him the full amount before he starts? or half now and half later? or all of it after the work is done? don't wanna ask the electrician, he will obviously be biased :) thanks for your time
