Would it be possible to attach lights to the corners of a daybed?

I recently acquired a secondhand aluminum daybed, with stupid gold spheres on the corners. I was wondering if it would be possible to attach glass globes to the bed in place of the gold balls, with lights inside them and cords running through the hollow tubing that makes up the bedframe. I'd like to be able to plug it into the wall like a lamp, and have an inline switch. Do you think that I could do this myself, or have an electrician do it for me?
