How do you check electrical kilowatt power output of electrical devices?

I basically want to know how to check my electrical power output against what the electric company says is being used at my home. I was wondering if there is a device that I could hook up to a lamp, for instance and see what the kilowatt output is of the that lamp? I also just in general would love to know how much output is actually being used.
