How much schooling do you need to become an electrician? Any information on the career?

I've been thinking about possible career choices for a while now, electrician is one of them that's come to mind. So with that said how much schooling would you need to become an electrician? I've thought between being an electrician and a plumber, and I think both would be good choices but to me I think electricians might be a little more in demand and have more work available but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. Any information is much appreciated though
