How do I become a licensed electrician? I live in Nassau County, NY?

I'm a civil engineer. I started reading the NEC code book so I could design and install the electric work in my home garage. I'm having fun. Since I'm reading most of the NEC code, I'm wondering what more I'd need to do to get an electrician's license? Anyone know?
